As temperatures begin to warm up across South Carolina, termite swarm season is right around the corner. Many homeowners are surprised to suddenly see winged insects inside their home during late winter or early spring.
If you notice what looks like flying ants near windows, doors, or light fixtures, it may not be “just ants.” It could be termite swarmers.
What Is Termite Swarm Season?
Swarmers are reproductive termites. Their purpose is to leave an established colony and start new ones. In South Carolina, termite swarms typically begin in late February and continue through April, depending on weather conditions.
Warm days, especially after rainfall, often trigger swarming activity.
Seeing termite swarmers outdoors around your property can be normal during this time of year. However, seeing them inside your home often means a colony may already be established within or very close to your home.
Why Swarmers Inside Your Home Matter
When swarmers appear indoors, it usually indicates termites are emerging from within the home itself or just beneath it.
This does not mean the infestation just started. In many cases, colonies have been active for months or even years before swarmers appear.
Because termites work behind walls and under flooring, damage often goes unnoticed until costly repairs are needed. In the U.S., termites are responsible for $5 billion to $6.5 billion in property damage and treatment costs every year, affecting roughly 600,00 homes. In South Carolina alone, termite damage is estimated to exceed $100 million annually. Most of this damage isn’t covered homeowners insurance, leaving homeowners to pay potentially very costly repair bills.
Termites vs. Flying Ants: How to Tell the Difference
It’s common to confuse termite swarmers with flying ants. Here’s how to tell them apart:
Termites:
- Straight antennae
- Equal-length wings
- Thick, uniform waist
Flying Ants:
- Bent antennae
- Front wings longer than back wings
- Pinched waist
If you’re unsure which insect you’re seeing, a professional inspection can quickly identify the problem.
What to Do If You See Swarmers
- Don’t panic.
- Avoid relying on store bought sprays, they won’t eliminate the colony.
- Schedule a professional termite inspection as soon as possible.
